Liquitex Black Gesso Primer is a premium acrylic gesso for use in the preparation of surfaces for acrylic and oil painting. The black gesso primer provides tooth and absorbency for both acrylic and oil paints, allowing for maximum colour adhesion and stability. Beyond painting, it is also suitable for use with graphite, pencil, charcoal, chalk, and oil pastels!
Liquitex Gesso Primer is non-yellowing, dries to a flexible layer, and will not crack. It will stiffen your canvas or working surface and give canvas a professional standard, archival base that will ensure the longevity of your artworks. Made with a blend of pigments for a black, opaque base, the Liquitex Black Gesso Primer eliminates your surface’s original colour and allows artists to build depth in their work. This primer is suitable for preparing canvas, paper, and wood for painting.
To use, apply Liquitex Gesso Primer straight from the container with a flat broad brush or a roller. The gesso can also be thinned up to 25% with water, or beyond 25% with a mixture of water and Liquitex Matte medium in equal measure. Before applying the gesso, sand down hard or shiny surfaces and apply a thin coat of gesso to start, allowing it to dry for 24 hours before beginning your painting. For a smoother base, sand after your first coat and reapply gesso.
If using as a base for oil painting, it is recommended you apply 2-4 coats of Liquitex Black Gesso Primer and sand between coats for a smooth, suitable finish.
