How to Make Gesso:

1. Prepare the Glue: Warm the desired amount of previously prepared rabbit skin glue until it becomes fluid. Avoid overheating, as this can weaken the glue and introduce air bubbles. Hot tap water is ideal. Use a double boiler: place the glue in the inner pan and fill the outer pan with water. After about 10 minutes, the glue should reach a milk-like consistency.
2. Add the Whiting: Slowly fold in English Whiting (Gilders Whiting) to the glue, using approximately the same volume as the glue. Mix gently to minimize air bubbles. Allow the mixture to settle for about 10 minutes, tapping the bottom of the container lightly to help any trapped air escape.
3. Achieve a Smooth Mix: Gently stir the mixture until uniform. Take care not to introduce new air bubbles during this step. If needed, strain the Gesso through a pair of old tights or fine cloth to remove lumps.
4. Optional: For the best results, refrigerate the mixture briefly to eliminate remaining air bubbles. Otherwise, you can begin applying immediately.

Handle the glue and mixture gently to maintain a smooth, bubble-free Gesso.

Adjust the whiting amount slightly depending on desired thickness and consistency.
